People keep saying that Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is unlike any movie ever made, and I don’t not agree with that statement. It is a pretty damn original movie concept, especially considering the corporate ubiquity of the source material. But the middle chunk of the movie, a fish-out-of-water vibe clash between the hyper twee Barbie and the harsh “real world” instantly reminded me of the classic 1990s Brady Bunch movies. The Brady movies don’t have anything nearly as deep to say about culture, but they are hella fun romps with tons of kitsch and double entendres. Plus, Christine Taylor and Jennifer Elise Cox turn in all-time great comedic performances that we do not celebrate nearly enough! So if you’re looking for that Barbie energy without all of the heavy emotions, a Very Brady Double Feature is in order.
