Chevrolet Extended Warranty Overview

Chevrolet offers three coverage levels under its protection plan** line of extended warranty products — the Platinum, Silver and Powertrain Protection Plans. Protection Plan warranties are available in several different term lengths.

**Protection plans are not officially extended warranties, because they don’t technically “extend” the coverage of a car’s original factory warranty. Protection plans have their own regulations, are often made by separate companies and are sold through dealerships and auto manufacturers.

Protection plans perform the same functions as extended warranties and can be considered in the same way when offered by automakers. For this article, the terms “protection plan”, “vehicle service contract” and “extended warranty” are all used interchangeably.

Chevrolet Extended Warranty Terms and Conditions

Availability: The Platinum, Silver and Powertrain Protection Plans can be bought at any time up to 8 years/100,000 miles, even after the expiration of your car’s factory warranty.

Financing: Some Chevrolet dealerships may include the cost of your extended warranty with your vehicle’s financing.

Repairs: If a mechanical issue is covered under the Chevrolet extended warranty, you can have your car serviced by any General Motors (GM) Co. dealership. That includes authorized Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and GMC locations.

Replacements: Replacement components utilized in covered repairs will be original equipment manufacturer (OEM) new or manufactured parts unless unavailable.

Benefits: All plans include towing and roadside assistance, rental car reimbursem*nt, trip interruption coverage and lockout services.

Deductible: Chevy doesn’t disclose deductible options for its warranties, but a sample contract states that the deductible will be $0 if another amount is not specified.

Transferability: The Chevrolet extended warranty is transferable in the event a vehicle is sold with remaining coverage. Subsequent owners can have the warranty transferred to their name for a $50 administrative fee.

Cancellations: Customers unhappy with their extended warranty coverage can cancel at any time. Unless you’ve filed a warranty claim, you can get a full refund if you cancel within 30 days. Those that cancel after 30 days or had a prior claim will receive a prorated refund, minus claims paid and any cancellation fees.

Waiting period: If you purchased your Chevrolet extended warranty at the time of purchase and it’s no longer covered under the original warranty, there’s a mandatory waiting period of 30 days or 1,000 miles (whichever comes first) before coverage begins.

What’s Not Covered by the Chevrolet Extended Warranty?

Opting for a Chevrolet extended warranty may give some extra peace of mind when it comes to repairs, but you still won’t have coverage for the entire vehicle. Here are some exclusions listed on the Chevy website:

  • Emissions components like the catalytic converter, solenoids and air pump
  • Battery and battery cable
  • Key fobs
  • Tire pressure sensors
  • Brakes
  • Trim items
  • Tires and wheels
  • Routine maintenance

Does a Chevrolet Extended Warranty Cover Maintenance?

Routine maintenance services are one of the things that aren’t covered under any Chevrolet extended warranty plan. However, you must perform these services on schedule in order to keep your warranty coverage valid. You can purchase a separate maintenance contract from Chevrolet that covers these services so that you don’t need to pay anything out of pocket when it’s time to have them done.

Is the Chevrolet Extended Warranty Worth It?

The low cost of a Chevrolet extended warranty and the benefits it offers make the plans an attractive option. But there’s more to consider when assessing the value of a service contract.

Reliability is generally a good thing for car owners, as it means fewer surprise trips to the service center. But it also means that it becomes less likely you’ll use the coverage you pay for.

Chevrolet Reliability

According to the J.D. Power 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study℠, Chevrolet makes some of the most reliable vehicles on the road. With 174 reported problems per 100 vehicles, Chevy ranked as the fourth-most dependable brand in the 2024 study.

Chevrolet doesn’t fare as well with RepairPal, however. The automaker has an overall reliability rating of 3.5 out of 5, ranking 20th out of 32 brands in the study.

The disparity between these ratings mean that it may be difficult to predict just how reliable your Chevrolet will be. That’s one reason an extended warranty could be a way to play it safe.

Chevrolet Repair Costs

Chevrolet vehicles cost an average of $649 per year to repair and maintain, roughly equivalent to the industry average of $652 per year, according to RepairPal. In the table below, we’ve included a few estimated repair costs for popular Chevrolet issues.

Chevrolet ModelRepairCost Range
Chevrolet ColoradoFuel pump replacement$910 to $1,009
Chevrolet EquinoxAC compressor replacement$941 to $1,239
Chevrolet Silverado 1500ABS control module replacement$573 to $937
Chevrolet MalibuIntake manifold gasket replacement$495 to $556

Is My Chevrolet Still Under Warranty?

Your vehicle must still be under the new car factory warranty or a CPO warranty to purchase a Chevrolet extended warranty. If your car is approaching the end of its term, either in age or mileage, and you want to buy a warranty plan from the manufacturer, you’ll want to take care of that as soon as possible. Third-party warranty providers, on the other hand, allow you to purchase coverage at almost any time.

MARKETWATCH GUIDES TIP

The official way to check your warranty status is to sign in to your account at Chevrolet.com and navigate to the “Vehicle Overview” tab and select the Warranty icon to view the Warranty Tracker.

There are also many third-party sites that can provide information about your warranty status. You’ll need to submit the vehicle identification information (VIN) from your Chevy to get your status.

Chevrolet New Car Warranty

Every Chevrolet comes with a new vehicle factory warranty — or, several, technically speaking. This coverage includes:

  • Bumper-to-bumper warranty: This 3-year/36,000-mile warranty covers repairs on nearly all mechanical vehicle parts between the front and rear bumpers.
  • Powertrain warranty: The engine, drivetrain and transmission are covered under this 5-year/60,000-mile warranty.
  • Electric and hybrid warranty: Vehicles with electric or hybrid engines are covered for 8 years/100,000 miles from the original in-service date.

The Chevrolet factory warranty includes one maintenance visit for a tire rotation, oil change or multi-point vehicle inspection that can be used during the first year of ownership. Additionally, 24-hour roadside assistance is available to new owners at no cost.

Chevrolet Certified Pre-Owned Warranty

Some vehicles may also be covered under the Chevrolet certified pre-owned (CPO) warranty. The qualifiers for a CPO Chevy include being fewer than six model years old, having fewer than 75,000 miles on the odometer, passing a 172-point vehicle inspection and having a clean title.

Cars that qualify get a 6-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, as well as a 1-year/12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty in addition to any remaining factory coverage. The plan includes a $0 deductible and is transferable to subsequent owners.

Chevrolet Extended Warranty Reviews

Compared with other car brands, Chevy offers solid extended warranty coverage. Drivers can find three levels of coverage with various deductibles, term lengths and mileage options. In addition, customers who are interested in bumper-to-bumper protection can find similar coverage through the Platinum Plan, which offers comprehensive coverage at an affordable rate.

Chevrolet extended warranties can also be a good option for those who don’t have the money up front and need financing or want to purchase added protection later.

Chevrolet Extended Warranty Complaints

Most online complaints concerning Chevrolet are found on the General Motors reviews page on the Better Business Bureau site. Most complaints are concerning issues with the initial warranty or against the dealership where they purchased coverage.

Common complaints about Chevrolet extended warranties include:

  • Customers having issues getting covered components repaired
  • Customers waiting several months for their vehicles to be fixed
  • Initial issues with the vehicle that were not fixed

Customers who purchase an extended warranty from a dealership should know that aggressive commissions and sales quotes are common in dealerships. This can lead to a poor purchase experience or sub-par customer service. If you’re unhappy with the dealership where you purchased your vehicle, other options are available for extended coverage.

Best Extended Warranty Options for Chevrolet

We mentioned earlier that third-party warranty companies offer more flexibility around when you can purchase your coverage. But independent providers have other advantages, too.

Most, for example, tend to offer a wider selection of coverage levels and options than automakers — even more than Chevrolet, which offers more options than many manufacturers. Warranty coverage from third-party providers can also be used at any ASE-Certified repair center in the country, as opposed to only Chevrolet service centers. You can also purchase a third-party extended warranty from the comfort of your own home, as opposed to having to buy coverage from a dealership.

Endurance vs. Chevrolet Extended Warranty

Endurance earned our top pick for the best extended car warranty company in our 2024 industry study. The company is one of the few direct providers in the industry, and has a broad selection of coverage options and generous benefits that put it at the top of its class.

Chevrolet Extended Warranty: The Bottom Line

Chevrolet has a better set of offerings for extended warranties than many manufacturers, complete with some generous benefits. Even so, you’ll find more selection, greater flexibility and often better prices with third-party vehicle service contract providers. If your Chevy is already out of its original or CPO warranty, independent providers will be your only option.

Our take is that the Chevrolet manufacturer extended warranty is an option worth considering, but plans from third-party providers and especially Endurance may offer more of what you need, less of what you don’t or both. Regardless, getting quotes from third-party providers is free, so there’s no reason not to compare your options.

Chevrolet Extended Warranty: FAQ

In the section below, we’ve provided answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about Chevrolet extended warranties from our experts.

Quotes for a Chevy extended warranty ranged from $1,139 to $2,528 in our 2024 secret shopping study. Cost varies based on the vehicle you want to cover, the coverage level you choose and the terms you select, among other factors.

You can buy a Chevy extended warranty after purchasing your vehicle. The only limitation if you want to buy a plan from Chevrolet is that you must purchase coverage before your new car factory warranty or CPO warranty expires. However, third-party warranty providers like Endurance allow you to purchase a coverage plan at any time.

The main downside to purchasing an extended warranty is that you may not end up using all of the coverage you pay for. However, it is also possible for the repairs covered under a warranty to substantially exceed the cost of the plan.
