How did Kratos get the chains off his arms? ›

The chains of the blades were permanently seared onto the forearms of the wielder, which served as a reminder of their oath to the God of War, and could only be removed either by the God of War himself or when the wielder's time of servitude ended.

In exchange for winning the battle for him, Ares gave Kratos the Blades of Chaos and made him the gods' herald. The blades were mighty weapons attached to Kratos' body via burning chains wrapped around his forearms. This act left marks burned into his skin that remained long after he removed the blades.

Blades of Chaos: Powerful weapons given to Kratos by Ares after he pledged his allegiance to him. Kratos lost them after Ares ripped them from his arms during a hallucination of Lysandra and Calliope and their deaths.

The large scar on his stomach is from when Zeus impaled him with the Blade of Olympus. Of course, Kratos also has his arm scars, where the Blades of Chaos' chains had caused permanent burn marks.

Later, Kratos would become a god himself as the God of War, but after he was (apparently) stripped of his godly powers and killed by Zeus, there was no one else to take the title of God of War.

In the series lore, the scar is eventually revealed to be the result of a childhood encounter with the Olympian god Ares, while the tattoo is a tribute to his dead brother Deimos, who had similar birth markings.
