Why were The X-Files cancelled? ›

The X-Files, a successful sci-fi TV show, ended after season 9 due to ratings decline and fan dissatisfaction. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprised their roles as Mulder and Scully in a 2008 film and a revival on Fox.

Mulder Was 31 When The X-Files Started And 56 When It Ended

Mulder is older than Scully, but only by a few years. Going by these dates, Mulder was 31 at the start of The X-Files when he first met Scully and they worked their first case together.

Production. After David Duchovny fulfilled his contractual obligations with the show's seventh season, he felt that there was not much else to do with the character. Fox Mulder's abduction was thus devised by Chris Carter in the seventh-season finale "Requiem" as a way of allowing the actor to leave the series.

Titled "Home," it premiered on October 11, 1996, and instantly garnered notoriety for its graphic content. Pulling no punches, the controversial episode tackled taboo subject matter including incest and infanticide and was infamously barred from airing on television for a full three years.

The X-Files ran for nine seasons and inspired two feature films, a spinoff series (The Lone Gunmen), and a 2016 revival, with a second reboot rumored to be in the works courtesy of Black Panther director Ryan Coogler.

Despite Anderson and Duchovny's past feelings towards each other, the success of The X-Files was largely attributed to the on-screen chemistry between Scully and Mulder. After reconciling, rumors spread that the actors were romantically involved, which they denied.

The Lone Gunmen series

The Lone Gunmen, a spin-off of the popular series The X-Files, is a television show that aired on the Fox network, featuring the characters of the same name. The show first aired in March 2001 and, despite good reviews, was canceled due to a drop in ratings. The last episode aired in June 2001.
